A Family Affair with Laya DeLeon Hayes, Gina and Keith Hayes

It’s a Hayes Family Affair! In my latest episode I talk with 18 year-old Laya DeLeon Hayes, one of the stars of CBS’ The Equalizer, along with her mom Gina and her dad Keith about what it takes to raise a child actor, and how parents can help their children pursue their passions. For my #GCP day ones, you might remember how I’ve explored this topic from different angles in past episodes. I’ve talked with Crystal McCrary McGuire about her son Cole Anthony’s path to the NBA and with Diana Napier about her daughter Emerson’s journey to Broadway. But this episode offers a unique perspective––it’s the first time I’m bringing an entire family’s viewpoint to the podcast! The Hayes fam shared how they discovered, explored and nurtured Laya’s acting passions, and they offer how-to’s for parents who want to create environments in which their children can achieve their dreams.

I also got to dig deep with Laya about the realities of being biracial in Hollywood. She explains how she connects to her Black and Filipino culture, and her parents share how important it is that they facilitate that journey. Learning about her history in both cultures strengthens Layla’s identity, bolsters her confidence, and helps her boldly chase her dreams. The Hayes family share valuable parenting wisdom in this episode as they discuss their journey.
This is one you won’t want to miss!

And there’s more! The fourth and final episode of the Lost Women of Science: “The First Lady of Engineering” podcast is coming out tomorrow! This fascinating story of Yvonne Young “YY” Clark, a Howard trained mechanical engineer who went on to teach engineering at Tennessee State University for 55 years, concludes with a look at HBCU’s impressive record of graduating students who go on to pursue STEM careers. I’m so excited about this season, which I co-hosted and produced. We’re featured in Apple Podcast’s “New and Noteworthy” list this week! I hope you'll have the chance to check it out.
