Navigating College Admissions: Summer Strategies
Expert Insights and Practical Tips for Parents and Teens
Today I taped a wide-ranging podcast conversation with a teen parenting expert (coming next season!) and we touched on how the college admissions season is so fraught for kids and parents alike. If you’ve got a high school rising junior or a senior, now, during these less hectic summer months, is a good time to sharpen your family’s focus on the college admissions process.
Perhaps you’ve planned or are planning college visits? Even if you are not planning to hit the road for college tours, it’s a good time to begin important conversations with your junior or senior about how you can work together to help them have the best possible college admissions experience. Check out these episodes from the #GCP archives for helpful insights!
In “The Black Family’s Guide to College Admissions with Tim Fields and Shereem Herndon-Brown”, college admissions experts Timothy Fields and Shereem Herndon-Brown tell us what Black families need to know about helping their teens succeed during the college application process. Timothy, a senior admissions officer at Emory University, and Shereem, a former high school college counselor who now runs a college counseling consulting firm, are authors of The Black Family's Guide to College Admissions, A Conversation About Education, Parenting and Race. We talked about how early parents should start focusing their kid’s attention toward college, why they must stay involved throughout the process, and what admissions officers are really looking for.
Eric Furda (former dean of admissions of the University of Pennsylvania) and Jacques Steinberg (former NYTimes education reporter) joined me to discuss “How to Have the College Conversation”. Co-authors of The College Conversation: A Practical Companion for Parents to Guide Their Children Along the Path to Higher Education, Furda and Steinberg brought lots of resources, tips and advice about managing the admissions process to our podcast conversation. This episode is great for you and your prospective college students to listen to together!
Are there SATs/ACTs on your child’s horizon? Be sure to check out my conversation with College Board President David Coleman, “Standardized Testing Success”. In this thoughtful and wide-ranging discussion, Coleman provides valuable perspective on the SAT & AP testing, and much more. You won’t want to miss his great advice on how to help students of all ages combat test anxiety and improve test performance.
Hope this helps ease some of the college admissions worries!
Enjoy,
